What is Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC)?
Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC)
Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) includes all forms of communication (other than oral speech) that are used by an individual to express needs, wants, thoughts and ideas. Research has shown that using AAC may support speech and language development.
It may also benefit an individual by:
- Reducing frustration and behaviours of concern
- Empowering individuals
- Facilitating social interactions
- Supporting learning and cognitive skills
- Increasing engagement
AAC systems can be used to support both receptive and expressive communication. There are a lot of different types of AAC including no-tech, low-tech and high-tech options.
